The practice

What the heat and the cold actually do.

Stated plainly, and only as far as the evidence goes. Bathing rituals have carried cultures through winters for two thousand years; the research has caught up in the last twenty.

One

The heat

Fifteen to twenty minutes of dry heat raises your core temperature and roughly doubles your heart rate. The body reads it as effort, then as permission to stop.

The evidence
A twenty-year Finnish study followed 2,315 middle-aged men. Those who used a sauna four to seven times a week had markedly lower rates of sudden cardiac death and all-cause mortality than those who went once. Sessions longer than nineteen minutes showed the strongest association.
What people notice
Muscles release. Sleep comes earlier and holds. The mind quietens in a way a hot shower never quite manages.
Two

The cold

Two to three minutes at ten to fifteen degrees. The first thirty seconds ask something of you. What follows is the reason people return.

The evidence
Cold water immersion after hard training has consistent support for reducing next-day muscle soreness. Beyond recovery the research is younger and thinner, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What people notice
An hour or two of unusual clarity afterwards. And a small, deliberate difficulty met first thing in the morning, which tends to make the rest of the day feel manageable.
Three

The contrast

Hot, then cold, then again. The Finns, the Russians, the Japanese and the Koreans each arrived at this independently. It is the oldest part of the practice and the part people keep.

The rhythm
Three rounds — twelve minutes warm, two minutes cold, a few minutes still. Around forty-five minutes from start to finish.
Why it lasts
Heat alone is pleasant. The cycle is a ritual, and rituals are what people come back to. It also works in a Gold Coast January, when heat alone does not.
Yours alone

No bookings. No queue. No strangers.

A studio session is forty minutes with people you have never met. This is your own room, your own water, and as long as you like.

Your time here

The Gold Coast, properly used.

Most people leave having eaten well, walked far and slept badly. This addresses the last of those, and quietly improves the first two.

01

First light

The water at six, the heat at seven, breakfast unhurried. A better start than a queue outside a café, and there is nothing to drive to.

02

After the drive

Ten hours on the M1, or a red-eye into Coolangatta. Twenty minutes of heat before dinner and the first day is yours rather than lost.

03

Together

A family gathering, a milestone weekend, a company retreat. Something shared that is neither a restaurant nor another round of drinks.

04

Between efforts

A marathon, a surf comp, a carnival. Recovery arrives where your people are staying rather than not at all.

05

For hosts

Short-stay hosts and building managers: an amenity your guests will mention, without owning, storing or maintaining anything.

06

Before you buy

Considering one for the house? Live alongside one for a fortnight first. The answer usually presents itself.
